Choose the visual role of the roofline
White fascia gives a crisp outline against darker siding. Matching fascia to the main trim repeats a colour already present around windows and doors. Matching it more closely to the siding reduces contrast, which can suit a simpler contemporary elevation. These are design options, not rules tied to a particular house age.
The soffit sits mostly in shadow, while fascia and gutters receive changing sunlight. They can share a colour without appearing identical. If you want a dark roof edge without a dark porch ceiling, compare dark fascia with a lighter soffit before ordering.
Coordinate gutters, trim and fixed finishes
Lay samples beside the actual brick, stone, roofing and window frames you will keep. Compare undertones: a warm white can look cream beside a cool white window. Give permanent materials priority over a temporary paint colour.
Decide whether downspouts should blend into the wall or continue the roofline colour. Check where they cross a different siding or masonry colour. Record the manufacturer, product, colour name and code for fascia, soffit, gutters and coil; similar colour names across suppliers are not proof of a match.
Approve samples and plan future maintenance
View the sample arrangement from the street and close up, in sun and shade. A sample bent to the intended profile reveals shadows better than a flat paint chip. If only one elevation is being replaced, compare new stock with weathered material on the remaining elevations.
Refinishing may be possible with a coating system approved for the existing finish; replacement is not the only route. Before repainting, ask the product and coating manufacturers about preparation, compatibility and warranty effects. Factory-finished aluminum still needs appropriate cleaning and inspection.
