Fence Installation and Replacement

Plan a fence project around the intended layout, material, gates and access requirements, with boundaries and unresolved site questions made clear.

Paving texture at the edge of the garden.

Define the yard without losing useful access

A fence can provide privacy, separate outdoor areas or establish a clear edge to the yard. Its layout and gates should support the way people, equipment and vehicles need to move through the property.

Privacy and openness

Solid and more open designs create different views and levels of enclosure. Height, material and spacing affect the experience on both sides, while the gate is often the part used most frequently.

Posts, slopes and alignment

The site shapes how panels and posts can be arranged. Sloping ground and changes of direction need deliberate detailing so the finished fence follows the property coherently.

A complete replacement

Old-fence removal, gate hardware and reinstatement around the work area can change the scope. Boundary and underground-service questions should be resolved before the installation layout is finalised.

Define the work

Items to discuss and define in the accepted quotation or management agreement; not automatic inclusions.

Fence line and use

Discuss the proposed layout, privacy, material, height and gates, including access for people and equipment.

Removal and site work

Identify old-fence removal, posts, hardware, finish and reinstatement, with boundaries and buried-service questions resolved before installation.

Options to consider

More privacy

A solid arrangement changes views and enclosure; review the experience from both sides and how gates interrupt the line.

More openness

An open arrangement defines the yard differently; discuss the actual spacing, material and use rather than relying on a style name.

Questions about Fence Installation and Replacement

Can the old fence establish the property line?

Treat it as an existing feature, not proof of the legal boundary. Resolve uncertain boundaries using the appropriate property information or professional assistance before approving post locations and the replacement layout.

How wide should the gate be?

Start with what must pass through, such as bins, garden equipment or vehicles. Review usable clearance, swing space, hardware and the ground beneath the gate rather than specifying only the panel width.

Can a fence follow sloping ground?

Discuss how panels, posts and gaps will be arranged along the actual slope. Reference photographs help, but the accepted layout should explain the changes in level and their effect on privacy and access.

Are underground locates needed for fence posts?

The excavation plan needs the utility-locate process completed and private buried services addressed. Ontario One Call provides the starting guidance; small post holes are not a reason to assume the ground is clear. Ontario One Call: public and private locates

Is staining or painting included?

Confirm the exact material and finish, then ask which preparation or decoration is included and when it can be done. A supplied-and-installed fence does not automatically describe a fully finished coating system.

What belongs in a replacement quotation?

Compare the same fence line, material, height, post arrangement, gates and hardware. Include removal, disposal and reinstatement, and record how uncertain boundaries or unexpected ground conditions would be handled.

Fence Installation & Repair in Kitchener-Waterloo

D&D Exterior Finishing installs fences throughout Waterloo Region. Whether you need privacy screening, pet containment, a property boundary, or enhanced curb appeal, our team installs fences that stay straight, plumb, and secure through Waterloo Region's demanding freeze-thaw seasons.

Why Post Depth Is Everything in Ontario

The single most common fence failure in Ontario is post heaving β€” where frost pushes posts up each winter until the fence is leaning and sagging within a few years. D&D Exterior Finishing sets all fence posts a minimum of 4 feet deep, below the frost line, in concrete footings. This is not optional on our projects β€” it's how we guarantee your fence stays straight for decades, not just seasons.

Types of Fences We Install

01

Wood Fence

Cedar and pressure-treated wood fences are the classic Ontario backyard choice β€” offering full privacy at an accessible price. We build solid board-on-board, shadowbox, and picket styles using quality lumber that accepts stain or paint for your preferred look.

02

Vinyl Fence

PVC vinyl fencing delivers a clean, bright white or tan appearance that never needs painting and won't rot or splinter. Vinyl is an excellent low-maintenance choice for Waterloo Region homeowners who want the look of a painted wood fence without the upkeep.

03

Chain Link

Galvanized or vinyl-coated chain link is the most durable and affordable fencing option for pet containment, commercial applications, and utility areas. We install residential and commercial chain link in 4', 5', and 6' heights with various mesh gauges and privacy slat options.

04

Aluminum Fence

Aluminum ornamental fencing offers the elegant look of wrought iron without the rust or maintenance. Available in black, bronze, and white powder-coat finishes, aluminum fence is the go-to for front yards, pool enclosures, and properties where aesthetics and longevity are both priorities.

Our Fence Installation Process

  1. Layout & Locate β€” We locate your property lines (using your survey or existing pins) and lay out the fence line to ensure accurate placement. We also check for buried utilities with Ontario One Call before digging.
  2. Post Hole Digging & Setting β€” Post holes are dug below the frost line (minimum 4 feet). Posts are set plumb and level in concrete footings and allowed to cure before fence panels are attached β€” preventing any shift during installation.
  3. Rail & Panel Installation β€” Rails, panels, or boards are installed with proper spacing and fastened with appropriate hardware for the fence type. Gates are hung, adjusted, and tested before completion.
  4. Final Inspection & Clean-Up β€” We do a full walkthrough of the completed fence, confirm all gates operate correctly, and clean up all material and excavation debris before leaving your property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fences

How much does fence installation cost in Kitchener-Waterloo?

Fence costs vary by material, height, and linear footage. Wood is typically the most affordable; vinyl and aluminum cost more upfront but require no long-term maintenance. D&D Exterior Finishing provides free written estimates with no surprise charges.

Is D&D Exterior Finishing licensed and insured for fence installation?

Yes. We are fully licensed and insured for fence installation in Ontario, WSIB compliant, and trained to handle all fence materials and post-setting methods.

Do you offer a warranty on fence installations?

Yes. All fence projects include our workmanship warranty. Material warranties vary by product. Details are in your written estimate before work begins.

Do I need a permit to install a fence in Kitchener-Waterloo?

Most residential privacy fences under 2 metres (6.5 feet) do not require a permit in Waterloo Region, but requirements vary by municipality and property type. We advise checking with your local municipality before installation β€” we're happy to assist with permit questions during your estimate.

Do you serve my area for fence installation?

We install fences throughout Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, Elmira, Ayr, New Hamburg, Baden, Woodstock, Brantford, Breslau, and surrounding communities.

How long does fence installation take?

Most residential fence projects are completed in one to two days. The concrete footings require a minimum 24-hour cure before fence panels are attached, so we typically pour footings on day one and complete the fence on day two.

What is the best fence for privacy in Ontario?

For maximum privacy, a 6-foot solid board wood fence or a solid-panel vinyl fence is the best choice. Cedar board-on-board construction offers excellent privacy with a staggered board pattern that also allows some airflow β€” reducing wind load on posts and panels, which extends the fence's life in Ontario's storm seasons.

Service Areas for Fences
