What capping covers and its repair limits
A contractor bends prefinished coil to fit fascia, window and door casings, corner boards or similar trim. The shape should retain the useful profile while directing water outward. Capping is a finish layer; it does not restore the strength of a rotten sill, fix a failed window seal or replace the flashing behind siding.
The wood must be assessed before it is concealed. Soft sections and the source of wetting need attention first. Ask for photographs of exposed problem areas and a written repair scope before approving a covering.
Specify the water-management details
Review how the top of each capped opening meets existing flashing and the wall drainage layer. A neat bead of sealant is not a substitute for a working water path. Ask the installer to identify the window’s drainage openings and keep them functional; do not apply a blanket rule to seal or leave open every bottom edge.
Have the quote identify the coil product and thickness, colour, covered surfaces, accessible wood repairs and sealant compatibility. Include access, removal of old material and cleanup so a trim-only quote can be distinguished from one that includes hidden repairs.
Balance maintenance, appearance and alternatives
Capping can flatten the character of detailed woodwork. Compare a sample on one opening if the moulding profile matters. Wood repair and repainting may preserve detail better; a suitable replacement trim may be preferable where the original is beyond repair.
Choose colour in the context of the siding and neighbouring trim, then keep the product details for later repairs. Clean as the manufacturer directs and inspect corners, joints and damaged coating. A universal service-life or never-peeling finish promise is not a reliable basis for choosing a product: condition, exposure, workmanship and product terms all matter.
