Verify the business and relevant experience
Confirm who is providing the contract and who will install the unit. Ask for current liability-insurance information and examples of comparable door work that the contractor can substantiate. Permission to discuss a previous project should come from its owner; catalogue photographs do not establish an installer’s own experience.
Ask what WSIB coverage and clearance requirements apply to this arrangement. WSIB describes an exception to the clearance requirement for certain home renovations hired directly by the resident, occupant or a family member. That is not a general promise of insurance protection or a reason to ignore applicable workplace obligations.
Have the installer explain the proposed assembly
Identify slab-only versus pre-hung replacement, the existing frame condition and whether opening repairs are included. Ask how the sill is supported and how the frame is aligned, flashed and air sealed using the selected door’s instructions.
Confirm material, finish, glass, handing, hardware and compatible replacement seals. For patio or French doors, review the operating panels and threshold arrangement. Request product ratings where energy performance is part of the decision rather than accepting a blanket claim that fibreglass always insulates better than steel.
Compare the same scope on every quote
List the brand and model, frame or jamb system, glazing, hardware, removal, disposal and interior/exterior finishing. Capping is one finishing approach, not automatically the right detail for every entry. Specify how the wall and trim will be left.
Ask for the treatment of hidden sill or framing damage, how changes will be priced and when approval is required. A lower total may reflect a different scope; ask for the difference to be explained instead of assuming either a bargain or a shortcut.
Read the actual warranty and follow-up terms
Obtain the manufacturer’s coverage for the ordered system and any separate finish, glass or hardware terms. Ask whether labour, adjustment visits and removal/reinstallation are included, and who receives a service request. Do not rely on a generic lifetime or multi-year promise.
Check that the written contract records the work, price, payment arrangements and timing. Resolve any municipal approval question before ordering, especially where openings or heritage features change. Product availability and site conditions should inform scheduling, not an unsupported local installation-time average.
How long will the door installation take?
Ask the installer to separate manufacturing and delivery lead time from time working at your home. After assessing the opening, the proposed schedule should cover removal, fitting, any sill or frame repairs, adjustments and finishing. Confirm how unexpected damage or an opening change could affect that schedule, and how an unfinished entry will be secured and protected from weather.
Questions to resolve before signing
- Which existing parts stay, and what evidence supports keeping them?
- What happens if the sill or subfloor is damaged?
- Which product instructions govern the installation?
- Who restores the interior trim and exterior finish?
- Who handles a door that later sticks or leaks, and on what terms?
At completion, operate and lock the door with the installer present, inspect the agreed finishes and retain the product identification. These checks create a more useful record than an unverified claim about neighborhood experience or a standard insurance amount.
