Choose a suitable discharge location
Look for a route that carries water away from foundations without sending it onto a neighbour’s property or a walking surface. Government of Canada guidance suggests an extension discharging into a well-draining area at least two metres from surrounding foundations where possible. This is guidance, not a substitute for local requirements.
Waterloo’s property standards address roof drainage, neighbouring properties, sidewalks, roads and the intended neighbourhood drainage pattern. Check the rules for the actual municipality before moving a discharge point. A longer extension is not automatically a better solution if it crosses a walkway or leads uphill.
Check extensions and the ground below them
An extension should remain connected and direct water to the intended location. Inspect for crushed sections, obstructed elbows and a low spot that holds water. A splash pad can limit erosion immediately below an outlet, but it cannot correct ground that slopes back toward the foundation.
Watch the area during rain from a sheltered position. Note ponding, soil erosion, water returning to the wall and any discharge onto steps or pavement. Those observations help distinguish an outlet problem from a broader grading problem.
Investigate buried connections before changing them
An underground pipe can conceal a blockage or an unknown destination. Confirm where it leads and how it can be inspected or cleared. Do not assume a buried connection is permitted, is a storm sewer, or should be disconnected without a replacement drainage plan.
Ask the municipality about rules for sewer connections or disconnection. Where grading is part of the problem, protect the established drainage pattern when considering changes. The repair scope should identify both the pipe work and the final place the water will go.
