Keep the installation and warranty record
Save the product details, colour, gutter and downspout sizes, discharge layout and photographs. Keep the contractor’s workmanship terms separately from the material or finish terms. Record who to contact and what maintenance the written terms require.
Ask which joints, access panels and connections may need attention and how they can be reached safely. If guards were fitted, obtain their care instructions and identify removable access at outlets before debris obscures the layout.
Observe the first rains and seasonal changes
From a safe, sheltered position, watch for dripping seams, water behind the gutter, overshooting at valleys and flow at the downspout ends. Mark the exact locations rather than reporting that the entire system leaks.
Inspect again after significant wind or debris events and during seasonal maintenance. A record of when overflow occurs helps distinguish an installation concern from a new obstruction. Avoid climbing onto wet or icy roof edges to investigate.
Clear debris through the whole system
Check troughs, guard surfaces, outlets, elbows and extensions. Removing leaves from the top without checking the downspout can leave the restriction in place. Use cleaning methods compatible with the product and arrange suitable access.
Guards can reduce debris entry but do not remove the need for inspection. Some systems provide access panels because fine debris can still collect around outlets. Do not seal those access points permanently shut.
Separate repairs from routine care
A loose hanger, recurring joint leak, damaged backing or persistent overflow after clearing needs assessment. Take dated photos and contact the responsible contractor with the relevant installation records.
Before applying sealant or altering a connection, check the product and warranty instructions. Preserve evidence of the defect where possible. A new gutter does not resolve an underlying roof leak, attic heat-loss issue or unsuitable grading.
Review discharge before freezing weather
Check that extensions remain connected and do not direct water onto walkways, neighbouring property or back toward the foundation. Follow the rain-barrel manufacturer’s winter procedure and confirm the alternate discharge route when the barrel is disconnected.
If ice or hanging components create a hazard, keep people clear and arrange appropriate help. Do not treat a gutter-cleaning routine as a complete ice-dam prevention plan.
