Eavestroughs are available in several materials, each with different performance characteristics, aesthetics, and price points. Understanding the options helps homeowners make informed decisions during replacement or new installation.
Aluminum is the dominant material for residential eavestroughs. Seamless aluminum gutters are formed on-site in continuous lengths, eliminating joints that can leak. They resist rust, accept paint, and are available in many colours. A quality aluminum installation lasts 20-30 years.

Steel eavestroughs are stronger than aluminum, important for properties with significant snow and ice load. Galvanized steel resists rust but eventually corrodes; Galvalume steel offers better corrosion resistance. Heavier and slightly more expensive than aluminum.
Copper eavestroughs are the premium choice. Copper won't rust, develops an attractive patina, and can last a century or more. Cost is significantly higher — copper eavestroughs are typically 3-5 times the cost of aluminum — making them primarily a heritage and luxury application.

Vinyl eavestroughs are the lowest-cost option, widely available at big-box stores for DIY installation. They're lightweight, won't rust, and are easy to cut. However, they become brittle with age, can crack in extreme cold, and connectors are a chronic leakage point.
Seamless installation (aluminum and steel) versus sectional installation (vinyl) is a key performance distinction. Joints in sectional gutters are a maintenance liability; seamless construction eliminates joints except at corners and downspout connections.
Regardless of material, eavestrough performance depends on proper installation: correct slope, adequate downspout placement, secure fastening to the fascia, and tight connections at all joints and outlets.
