Exterior caulking product selection is more consequential than many homeowners realize. Using the wrong product in a specific application results in premature failure, often within one to three seasons.
Silicone caulks offer the best adhesion to non-porous surfaces (glass, metal, ceramic) and the best long-term flexibility and weather resistance. However, most silicone caulks are not paintable — an important limitation for many exterior applications.
Planning Your Project
Paintable silicone or siliconized acrylic caulks combine silicone's flexibility with paintability. These are among the best choices for general exterior use — window and door perimeters, trim joints, and transitions between cladding materials.
Polyurethane caulks offer excellent adhesion to porous materials (wood, masonry) and high durability in exterior applications. They're slower to cure than acrylic products and require solvent for cleanup. Used where adhesion to difficult substrates is paramount.
Working With D&D Exterior Finishing
Acrylic latex caulks are the most widely used general-purpose exterior sealant. They're easy to apply, paintable, and economical. Quality varies significantly — premium formulations with silicone additives outperform basic latex caulks substantially.
Butyl rubber caulk is used for specific applications where other products fail: metal flashings, roofing, and areas with extreme movement. Less common in general exterior applications but the right tool for those specific uses.
Never use interior caulk outdoors. Interior caulks lack the UV resistance and moisture tolerance required for exterior exposure. They fail within a single season outdoors, leaving a worse condition than no caulk at all.
