Compare materials without a universal ranking
Insulated steel and fibreglass doors are available in many configurations. Wood offers a different appearance and finishing approach. Ask to see the finish instructions for the proposed product and discuss sun, rain exposure and any protective overhang. No material should be sold as needing no care.
A steel face can be dented or scratched; a fibreglass skin avoids rust on that skin but does not make every component of the assembly immune to deterioration. The frame, hardware and finish have their own requirements. Compare named products rather than assume one material always lasts longer or offers the best security.
Read the energy and glazing specification
Use the rated U-factor of the proposed complete product. Insulation values quoted for a door core are not a substitute for the performance of its frame, edges and glass. Confirm current Canadian certification when it is part of your requirements.
Glass inserts and sidelites change daylight, view and privacy. Specify the exact glazing, pattern and any applicable safety-glass requirements with the supplier. Check how the assembly looks from both sides and ask how the chosen configuration affects its rating. More glass is a design decision that deserves a product-specific comparison.
Make sealing and hardware part of the purchase
Confirm the lock and hinge models, handing and future service options. Do not assume a particular screw length or deadbolt dimension is a universal prescription for every frame and wall. The installer should follow the assemblyβs fastening and support requirements.
Inspect the existing threshold and surrounding frame before deciding to retain them. The new sill, sweep and perimeter weatherstripping must meet correctly when the door latches. Ask how flashing, air sealing and interior/exterior finishing will be completed. At handover, check operation and request the maintenance and coverage documents for the actual installed system.
