Look for inspection and repair judgement
Ask how the contractor will inspect behind the gutter and confirm attachment quality. Ground-level photographs can locate symptoms but cannot establish the condition of every concealed board. Where access or opening is needed, agree on that assessment first.
Confirm the business, proposed crew and relevant coverage documents. Ask about the applicable WSIB arrangement and the access plan. Avoid relying on a broad claim of being licensed or insured as a substitute for describing the actual work.
Ask what will happen after the gutter comes off
Ask how soft board, split ends or damaged roof-edge backing will be handled. A useful answer identifies what can be assessed in advance, what needs opening, and how photographs and a written change will authorize additional repairs.
Ask how the new fascia relates to roof-edge flashing, the soffit channel and gutter attachments. The contractor should explain the existing water route and any changes. New capping over failed backing does not restore the fastener connection.
Compare repair lengths and finish specifications
Have the quotation separate board replacement from metal covering, with locations and measured lengths. Specify the replacement board dimensions or supporting design, coil product, thickness in units and colour. Identify whether old gutters are removed, reused or replaced.
Include access, disposal and any roof work required to complete the upper edge. Ask how an allowance for concealed damage becomes a final charge. Do not substitute a generic per-foot market number for the scope of your roof edge.
Check past performance and the handover
Ask references whether the contractor disclosed hidden defects and returned to address recurring leaks or loose parts. A freshly covered fascia can look good before its concealed repairs have been tested by weather.
Obtain actual workmanship and finish terms. At handover, request photos of repaired backing and inspect the visible alignment from the ground. Gutters need their intended drainage fall; βlevelβ is not a reliable acceptance rule. Visible approved fasteners alone are not a defect.
Resolve cap-versus-replace questions
- Must the whole fascia be replaced?
- Not necessarily. A localized repair may be suitable when surrounding material and attachments remain sound.
- Why does staining return?
- Possible causes include overflow, leaking joints and water behind the roof edge. Identify the source before another cosmetic repair.
- Can the gutter simply be reattached?
- Only after the supporting material and specified attachment are shown to be suitable.
