Assess the opening and existing surround
Look for deterioration near the bottom of jamb trim, staining at the head and gaps beside the door. Confirm which piece is decorative casing and which carries the flexible weather seal. A wider board does not by itself seal the moving door or repair water entering behind the trim.
Have the backing checked where the old trim is damaged. Note how the head flashing connects with the siding or masonry and how water leaves that detail. Correct the cause of repeated wetting before covering the opening with a new profile.
Choose proportions and material together
Mock up the proposed surround over a straight-on photograph. Compare its width and projection with nearby windows, masonry returns and roofline details. A backband or built-up casing can add depth; a keystone is an optional design choice rather than an improvement required for every style.
Check whether the additional projection fits the existing wall and head-flashing detail. Compare wood, PVC or metal-finished options by maintenance, finish and installation needs. PVC is moisture resistant but moves with temperature, so it requires suitable support, joints and fasteners rather than an assumption of dimensional immobility.
Preserve operation and specify the finish
Install the weather seal to make the contact required by its instructions without binding the door. Confirm the door can travel normally and that the new trim does not obstruct hardware or clearances. Door-operation problems need assessment of the door system rather than forcing the surround into a different position.
If painting the door or trim, check each manufacturerβs coating and colour restrictions independently. Review the complete elevation with samples before selecting a strong contrast. Record the profile, finish, seal and any concealed repairs; neither a standard extra trim width nor an advertised return on investment is needed to define a useful upgrade.
