Exterior Renovation Services
James Hardie siding products are among the most popular fibre cement cladding options in Canada. They're warranted for 30 years, but realizing the full benefit of that warranty requires appropriate maintenance.
Painting is the primary maintenance requirement. Hardie products require repainting when the finish shows chalking, fading, or coating failure — typically every 10-15 years for quality exterior paints. Hardie itself offers factory-applied ColorPlus finishes with extended paint warranties.
Planning Your Project
Clearance from horizontal surfaces must be maintained. Hardie installation guidelines specify minimum clearance from grade, decking, and other horizontal surfaces. Clearance that is reduced by settling, landscaping changes, or deck additions allows moisture wicking that voids warranty.
Caulking at joints and penetrations requires periodic inspection and maintenance. Hardie recommends specific caulking products; using non-recommended products may affect warranty coverage.
Working With D&D Exterior Finishing
Do not pressure wash Hardie siding with high pressure. Normal cleaning with low-pressure water and a soft brush is appropriate. High-pressure washing can damage cut edges, forcing water into the siding body.
Inspect for damage after severe weather events. Unlike vinyl, fibre cement can crack if struck by significant impact. Damaged boards are replaceable — cutting out the damaged section and installing a new board is a manageable repair.
Keep gutters and downspouts functioning. Water overflowing from clogged eavestroughs runs down siding surfaces, accelerating paint deterioration and potentially infiltrating behind siding at horizontal joints.
