Seasonal Exterior Home Inspection: What to Check Each Season

Regular seasonal inspections catch developing problems early. Here's what to look for throughout the year.

Exterior Renovation Services

Seasonal exterior inspections are low-cost, high-value home maintenance. A 30-minute walk around your home each season identifies developing problems before they become emergency repairs.

Spring inspection priorities: inspect eavestroughs for winter damage, check roofline for ice dam damage, look for frost heave at walkways and steps, inspect siding for cracked or displaced panels from ice loading, and confirm that all drainage features are clear and functional.

Planning Your Project

Summer inspection priorities: check exterior paint for peeling or chalking, inspect deck and outdoor structure condition, look for pest activity (wasp nests at eaves, woodpecker damage, ant entry points), and evaluate landscaping drainage near the foundation.

Fall inspection priorities: clean and inspect eavestroughs before leaf fall completes, check caulking around windows and doors, ensure window weep holes are clear, inspect fascia and soffit for moisture damage from summer, and confirm your heating system exterior exhaust is clear.

Working With D&D Exterior Finishing

Winter inspection priorities: after ice storms, check for ice dam formation at eaves, inspect eavestrough condition after heavy ice loading, look for icicles that indicate heat loss through the roof assembly, and note areas of unusual snow melt patterns.

Photograph each inspection systematically. Year-over-year comparison reveals deterioration rates that aren't obvious from a single observation. Photographs also document condition at a point in time, useful for insurance and sale purposes.

Create a simple log of inspection dates and findings. This record tracks developing trends, documents maintenance activities, and demonstrates due diligence that has both insurance and legal value.
