Exterior capping is formed metal fitted over suitable trim or other backing. Its finish, attachment and water-shedding details need to work with the opening and wall around it.
Five signs to assess
1. Loose or lifting metal
A return lifting away from a window, a flapping section or a visibly loose corner needs attention. Record the location from a safe position and keep clear of sharp or hanging pieces. The repair may involve the cap, its attachment or damaged wood behind it.
2. Repeated leaks at a capped opening
If water appears around a window or door after rain, note when it happens and photograph the interior and exterior areas. Capping, head flashing, the window itself and the wall above are separate possible sources. Repeated caulking without tracing the route can leave the actual defect in place.
3. Soft or deteriorated trim exposed at an edge
Capping can conceal the condition of wood. If decay is visible at an open joint or an accessible area has already been found soft, ask for the concealed trim to be assessed. Replacement metal cannot make that backing sound. Agree on the repair before it is covered.
4. Damaged joints or obstructed drainage
Look for failed corner joints, missing pieces and sealant covering openings meant to drain. Have the installer explain the detail for the particular window or trim assembly. A universal instruction to seal every edge, or to leave every edge open, is not a drainage design.
5. Damage that defeats the finish or profile
Deep dents, torn edges and displaced pieces may require a formed replacement. Faded colour or a small cosmetic scratch alone is a different decision. Compare repair, refinishing and replacement against the condition of the whole opening rather than treating appearance as proof of concealed rot.
Turn the observations into a capping scope
List affected openings, close-up photographs, leak history and any planned window or siding work. Ask the quote to distinguish metal repair, wood repair and flashing work. Retain colour and product details so a localized repair has the best chance of matching.
Check the written scope and actual coverage documents before hiring. Ask how continuing joint inspection and cleaning should be handled. A documented repair to a specific defect is more useful than a promise that capping will never need attention.
A capping quote should account for the number and shape of openings, access equipment, metal profiles and any backing or flashing repairs. Ask which findings would change the agreed price before work proceeds.
