Spring Exterior Home Maintenance Checklist for Ontario Homeowners

Spring is the time to assess winter damage and prepare your home for the season ahead. Use this exterior checklist.

Exterior Renovation Services

Spring exterior maintenance addresses winter's toll and prepares surfaces for the demanding summer season. A systematic approach catches developing problems before they become expensive failures.

Eavestroughs and downspouts: clear debris accumulated over winter, flush downspouts, verify slope is maintaining, and check for separation at joints or pull-away from fascia from ice loading.

Planning Your Project

Roofline inspection: from the ground, look for displaced shingles, lifted flashing, and soffit/fascia damage from ice. Schedule a closer inspection if anything looks concerning from ground level.

Siding inspection: walk the perimeter and look for cracked, buckled, or displaced siding panels, gaps at joints, and water staining that suggests infiltration occurred over winter.

Working With D&D Exterior Finishing

Window and door inspection: check weatherstripping condition, look for frost damage to exterior trim, test window operation, and inspect caulking for any areas where frost heave or ice may have caused movement.

Caulking audit: run your finger along all caulked exterior joints. Caulk that feels hard, cracked, or pulls away from the surface needs replacement before spring rains arrive.

Foundation perimeter: check that grade around the foundation still drains away from the building. Winter frost heave can change grade in ways that direct spring melt toward the foundation. Re-grade or install drainage swales where needed.
