Find the repeated source of moisture
Look at failed head flashing, open joints, roof runoff, splashback and soil or mulch against trim. Staining below an opening or peeling confined to one corner can help locate a recurring wetting pattern. Check the surrounding wall and backing where visible damage suggests more may be concealed.
Decay organisms need suitable conditions, including sustained moisture. A moisture reading or outside temperature is useful evidence, not an absolute safe/unsafe threshold for every piece of wood. Cold weather does not erase an existing decay problem. Reduce the water exposure and assess damaged material.
Maintain the details that shed water
Keep drainage paths and required material clearances open. Renew failed sealant only where the assembly requires a sealed joint. Inspect coatings and exposed edges, and use the appropriate finish system where wood is meant to be painted or stained.
A coating can protect the surface from weathering but is not an active cure for decay. If preservative treatment is considered, select a product approved for the wood and exposure and follow its label. Do not assume borates or any pesticide are harmless to people and animals or suitable for every exterior application.
Choose repairs without concealing the cause
Localized architectural trim damage may suit an appropriate repair system after the condition and drying requirements are addressed. More extensive damage or unreliable support can require replacement. A consolidant or filler does not establish that structural damage has been repaired.
Wood, cellular PVC and metal-finished trim require different installation and maintenance details. Rot-resistant trim can still cover vulnerable backing, so photograph and repair the underlying problem before installing it. Keep the repair record and revisit the site after wet weather to see whether the recurring moisture has actually been reduced.
