Vinyl siding has been the dominant choice in Ontario residential construction for decades. It's cost-effective, lightweight, comes in an enormous range of colours and profiles, and requires minimal maintenance. Vinyl never needs painting — the colour is integrated throughout the material — and it can be cleaned with a garden hose.

Material Selection Guide

The limitation of vinyl is dimensional stability. In Ontario's extreme temperature swings, vinyl expands and contracts significantly with the seasons. This thermal movement means installer experience matters enormously; improperly installed vinyl buckles, gaps, and loosens over time. Premium insulated vinyl siding partially mitigates this issue.

Fibre cement siding is a composite of cement, sand, and cellulose fibres. It's heavier, harder, and significantly more rigid than vinyl. It holds paint exceptionally well — painted fibre cement typically needs repainting every 15 to 20 years, far less often than wood. It's also fire-resistant, which vinyl is not.

What the Installation Process Looks Like

The trade-off with fibre cement is cost and installation complexity. The material costs roughly 2 to 3 times more than standard vinyl, and its weight requires more careful structural support consideration. Cutting and installing fibre cement also requires specialized tools and more labour time.

For Ontario homes in areas with significant impact risk — hailstone zones in southwestern Ontario, areas with heavy tree cover — fibre cement's resistance to denting and cracking gives it a significant advantage over vinyl. For budget-conscious projects where impact risk is lower, vinyl remains an excellent choice.
