Weatherstripping Replacement for Windows and Exterior Doors

Weatherstripping seals the joints that must still move when a door or window opens. Replacing a worn strip can address a local draft, provided the sash, hinges and frame are first checked for alignment and damage.

Find the joint that is leaking

Inspect with the unit closed and latched. Look for torn, flattened, loose or missing seals and note where a draft is felt. If a latch will not engage or the gap changes sharply along the frame, adjustment or repair may be needed before a new seal can work.

Distinguish a moving joint from the fixed frame-to-wall connection. A cold draft behind interior trim will not necessarily be cured by changing sash weatherstripping. Do not caulk an operable sash shut, cover an escape opening or plug drainage slots to stop a draft.

Match the profile and attachment method

Photograph the seal in place and identify the manufacturer or product label. Match its cross-section, mounting method, width and compression range. A strip that looks similar from the front can have the wrong backing or fit too tightly. Obtain the replacement before discarding an identifiable sample.

Brush or pile seals, compressible bulbs, magnetic seals and adhesive products serve different assemblies. Some fit a groove; others slide into a channel or attach to a clean surface. Follow the instructions for that profile rather than adding nails, staples or adhesive by assumption.

Fit, operate and recheck

Clean the mounting surface or channel using a method compatible with the finish. Seat the replacement without stretching it, and follow the product’s corner and end details. Check the door bottom separately: a sweep, sill cap and corner pads may be distinct parts that need to work together.

Close and latch the unit several times. The seal should make contact without requiring force or defeating the lock. Recheck the original draft location and keep a note of the replacement part number. If the gap remains, investigate alignment, damaged components or the fixed perimeter instead of stacking extra seals.
