Signs It's Time to Replace Your Windows

Drafty windows aren't just uncomfortable β€” they're expensive. Knowing when repair is no longer sufficient and full replacement is the smart investment protects your home and energy bills.

Window and Door Replacement

Drafty windows aren't just uncomfortable β€” they're expensive. Knowing when repair is no longer sufficient and full replacement is the smart investment protects your home and energy bills.

The single most measurable sign that windows need replacement is a dramatic increase in heating or cooling bills. Modern double or triple-pane windows with low-E coatings and argon gas fills have a much lower U-factor (heat transfer rate) than older single or degraded double-pane units. If your heating costs have risen noticeably with no other explanation, windows may be the culprit.

Energy Efficiency and Style

Condensation between glass panes indicates seal failure. The insulating gas between panes has escaped and been replaced by moisture-laden air, eliminating the thermal performance advantage of double-pane glass. This is not repairable β€” once a seal fails, the unit needs replacement.

Drafts around windows that you can feel with your hand indicate either failed weatherstripping or deteriorated frame integrity. Weatherstripping is a relatively inexpensive repair. But if the frame itself β€” particularly wood frames β€” has deteriorated from moisture intrusion, the structural seal is compromised and full replacement is the correct solution.

Difficulty opening, closing, or locking windows is more than a convenience issue. Windows that don't seal completely when closed are actively losing conditioned air and may not provide adequate emergency egress. Double-hung and casement windows that no longer close flush indicate frame warping or hardware failure.

Noise transmission is a quality-of-life factor worth addressing. Older single-pane or degraded double-pane windows transmit street noise, aircraft noise, and neighbour noise much more readily than modern units. Laminated glass options provide exceptional noise reduction for homes near roads, rail lines, or flight paths.
