Hinged windows: casement and awning
Casements hinge at the side and swing outward. A crank can make them useful above a counter, but the sash needs clear space outside and the handle must be reachable. Confirm which way each unit opens and how the screen is removed.
Awning windows hinge at the top and open outward at the bottom. Their projecting sash may shelter part of the opening in some weather, but an open awning is not a guarantee against wind-driven rain. Check clearance above paths and decks, and close windows when conditions require it.
Sliding sashes: hung and horizontal styles
Double-hung windows have two vertically moving sashes; single-hung windows retain a fixed upper sash. Horizontal sliders move sideways within the frame. These arrangements avoid an outward swing, which can be useful near traffic routes or other obstructions.
Look beyond the overall frame size. The sash overlap, operating hardware and screen affect ventilation and access. Confirm cleaning features on the exact model. A basement location does not automatically make a slider suitable: room use, clear opening, window-well conditions and applicable escape requirements still need review.
Fixed, bay and bow configurations
A fixed picture window brings in light and a view without opening for ventilation. It can be combined with operable units, but do not replace an opening needed for ventilation or escape solely to gain a simpler appearance.
Bay and bow arrangements project beyond the wall and combine multiple units. The quote should address support, the roof or top covering, insulation, drainage and finishing around that projection. Their complexity is different from exchanging a flat window. Compare the exact assembly’s performance and visible glass proportions rather than choosing from a style name alone.
