Siding Installation and Repair
Wood siding on older Ontario homes requires consistent maintenance to prevent moisture damage, rot, and paint failure — but the aesthetic payoff is unmatched.
Wood siding — whether horizontal clapboard, board-and-batten, or cedar shingles — is found on thousands of heritage and older homes across the Kitchener-Waterloo Region. It's beautiful, repairable, and sustainable, but it demands a disciplined maintenance routine.
Material Selection Guide
Painting or staining is the primary protection mechanism for wood siding. Paint forms a film barrier that prevents moisture penetration, while stain penetrates the wood grain and allows it to breathe. For most Ontario climates, high-quality exterior latex paint with a 100% acrylic formulation is the preferred choice, providing excellent adhesion and flexibility through temperature cycles.
Repainting intervals depend on the quality of the previous application, the sun exposure of each elevation, and the original wood condition. South-facing walls take the most UV abuse and typically need repainting every 5 to 7 years; sheltered north elevations may go 10 to 12 years before showing failure.
What the Installation Process Looks Like
Caulking around windows, doors, trim, and board joints is the most maintenance-neglected area on wood-sided homes. Failed or missing caulk allows water ingress at joints, which is the primary entry point for rot. Annual inspection and recaulking of any cracked or separated joints prevents the costly rot repair that results from ignored water penetration.
When rotted sections are identified, spot repair with epoxy wood filler is appropriate for small areas. For sections larger than 30 to 40 cm, full board replacement is recommended. Attempting to filler-patch large rot areas results in recurring failure as the surrounding wood continues to degrade.
