Double-hung windows have two sashes that slide vertically within the frame. They're the classic residential window style in North America and remain the most popular choice for most rooms. Both sashes tilt inward on modern double-hung units for easy cleaning from inside.

Casement windows are hinged on one side and swing outward like a door. They're operated by a crank handle at the bottom of the frame. When open, the entire sash area is available for ventilation — unlike double-hung windows, where only half the opening can be exposed at once. This makes casements significantly more efficient for natural ventilation.

For kitchens where you want to direct airflow toward you while cooking, casements are the preferred choice. They can be angled to catch prevailing breezes and direct them into the room. This natural ventilation advantage is particularly valuable above sinks where reaching up to lift a sash is awkward.

Casements require clear exterior space to swing open, making them unsuitable above decks or walkways where they'd create a hazard. Double-hung windows work in any configuration because they open vertically without projecting into exterior space.

Energy performance tilts toward casements. When a casement is closed, the sash presses tightly against the frame seal around its entire perimeter. Double-hung windows have a horizontal sash meeting point that creates a slightly more complex seal geometry. Premium double-hungs close this performance gap with multi-point locking systems.
