A quality exterior paint job starts long before the first brush stroke — surface preparation determines how long the paint adheres and how professional the result looks.

Paint failure — peeling, bubbling, cracking — is almost always caused by inadequate surface preparation, not paint quality. The most expensive paint on the market will fail prematurely if applied over dirty, chalky, or improperly primed surfaces. Conversely, a mid-grade paint applied correctly over a well-prepared surface outperforms premium paint over poor prep.

Preparation Is Everything

Pressure washing is the standard starting point for exterior prep. A surface free of dirt, algae, mould, and chalky oxidation accepts primer and paint far more effectively. Allow 2 to 3 days of dry, warm weather after pressure washing before painting to ensure complete moisture evaporation.

Scraping loose paint is non-negotiable. Running a hand over any painted surface and feeling paint lift indicates adhesion failure that must be addressed. Skip scraping and the new paint coat adheres only to the loose layer below it, repeating the failure cycle within 2 to 3 years.

Long-Lasting Results

Caulking all gaps, cracks, and joints before painting seals potential water entry points. Paintable acrylic caulk is the standard choice; silicone caulk should be avoided around wood because it's difficult to paint over and hardens in a way that doesn't flex with wood movement.

Priming is not optional for bare wood or previously repainted surfaces with adhesion issues. Primer creates a chemically bonded foundation for topcoats, improves colour uniformity, and extends the life of the paint system. Spot-priming areas of bare wood — even mid-project — prevents those areas from absorbing the topcoat differently and creating visible sheen variation.
