Spray foam insulation in the attic is significantly more expensive than blown fibreglass — understanding when it's justified helps homeowners make the investment decision correctly.
Cathedral ceiling and complex roof geometry applications are where spray foam's advantages over blown or batt insulation are clearest. Spray foam adheres directly to roof deck surfaces, creating continuous insulation without the air gaps and thermal bridging that are inherent in between-rafter batt insulation systems.
Planning Your Project
Air sealing capability is spray foam's most significant performance advantage over fibreglass. A 2-inch layer of closed-cell spray foam applied directly to the underside of the roof deck both insulates and air-seals in a single application. The combination of air barrier and insulation is significantly more effective than R-value alone suggests.
Conditioned attic conversion: applying spray foam directly to the roof deck creates a 'conditioned attic' — an attic space that is inside the building's thermal envelope rather than outside it. This approach is valuable for homes where mechanical systems (furnaces, ductwork, HRVs) are located in the attic, as it eliminates energy loss from uninsulated mechanical equipment.
Working With D&D Exterior Finishing
Cost reality: closed-cell spray foam costs $2 to $4 per square foot more than blown fibreglass. For a 1,200 square foot attic, this represents $2,400 to $4,800 in additional material and labor cost. The payback calculation requires comparing the energy saving of the air-sealing performance improvement against the incremental cost.
Open-cell versus closed-cell spray foam for attic applications: open-cell foam is lower density, lower cost, and lower R-value per inch (approximately R-3.7) but excellent for air sealing. Closed-cell foam is denser, higher cost, and higher R-value per inch (approximately R-6.5) with moisture-control properties. For exterior roof deck applications, closed-cell is the standard specification.
