Confirm the problem and identify the window
Check that the haze is between the panes of a sealed unit rather than on an accessible surface or between a separate storm window and the main window. Note whether it clears during the day and keep photographs; intermittent fog can still be relevant to a claim.
Find the manufacturer, labels and installation paperwork before ordering. Ask the supplier what identification and measurements are required. Glass thickness, coatings, spacer details and safety-glazing requirements need a compatible specification; a paneβs visible width is not necessarily its ordering dimension.
Compare glass, sash and complete-window scopes
An IGU replacement retains the serviceable sash and surrounding frame. This may be practical where the glazing system allows it and a matching unit is available. Ask who removes and reinstalls the glazing beads, seals or other retaining components.
A replacement sash also renews the frame immediately around the glass, if the correct part is available. Full-window work addresses a larger scope, such as deteriorated framing, persistent opening leaks or a design change. Compare installed quotations rather than assume a fixed percentage saving between these options.
Assess defogging and warranty claims
A defogging service should explain its method, limitations and coverage in writing. A change in appearance does not by itself demonstrate restored gas fill, edge-seal durability or the original energy rating. Avoid treating any one drilling or drying method as a universal equivalent to a replacement IGU.
Before authorizing work, check existing manufacturer coverage and whether it includes labour as well as parts. Have the frame and drainage checked so the repaired unit is installed in a sound assembly. Retain the replacement specification and invoice for future service. Precise measurement and glass handling make this work more involved than simply ordering a panel online.
