Replacing Wood Soffit and Fascia with Aluminum: What the Process Involves

Fascia, Soffit, and Gutters

Upgrading from painted wood to aluminum-capped or vented aluminum soffit and fascia eliminates the most maintenance-intensive exterior maintenance task on most Ontario homes.

Wood soffit and fascia on homes built before the 1990s typically require painting every 5 to 8 years. Without consistent painting, the wood absorbs moisture, swells, and develops rot — particularly at joints, end grains, and areas where paint has failed. Aluminum replacement eliminates this maintenance cycle entirely.

Protecting Your Home's Exterior

The replacement sequence: eavestrough removal to access the fascia; old fascia removal (or aluminum capping if in sound condition); soffit panel removal; inspection of the underlying fascia backer and lookouts (the framing that supports the soffit); replacement of any rotted or damaged framing; installation of new aluminum soffit and fascia with proper ventilation for attic airflow.

Vented soffit panels are the standard choice for Ontario homes. The perforated panel design allows attic air intake while providing a clean, finished appearance. The amount of ventilation required is calculated based on attic footprint — the 1:150 rule (one square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor) guides the proportion of vented versus solid panel.

Professional Installation

Aluminum gauge selection: standard residential aluminum soffit and fascia is .019 (19-gauge) material. Heavier .024 gauge is available and provides better rigidity in long spans and more resistance to denting. For homes with wide overhangs or exposed soffit sections where impact risk is higher, the heavier gauge is worthwhile.

Colour selection for new aluminum soffit and fascia should coordinate with the planned or existing siding and trim colours. White and off-white remain the most common choice, providing a clean, neutral complement to virtually any siding color. Aluminum coil is available in a wide range of colors to match existing trim exactly.
