Fascia and soffit are often overlooked until a major problem develops — knowing the warning signs prevents small issues from becoming structural repairs.

Fascia boards run along the lower edge of the roofline, providing the mounting point for eavestroughs and a clean visual finish to the roof edge. Soffit panels fill the space between the fascia and the house wall under the roof overhang. Both are exposed to moisture, pest intrusion, and physical weathering year-round.

Protecting Your Home's Exterior

The most visible sign of fascia failure is paint peeling, bubbling, or pulling away in large sections. This typically indicates water damage from overflowing or improperly pitched eavestroughs. When water sits against wood fascia repeatedly, paint adhesion fails and rot follows quickly.

Soft spots or depressions in fascia when pressed indicate rot. Healthy fascia should feel firm and solid. A soft, spongy area — even if the paint surface looks intact — means the wood below is compromised and the board needs replacement before the eavestrough it supports fails.

Professional Installation

Soffit panels that are visibly cracked, broken, or missing allow pests — wasps, birds, and squirrels — direct access to the space between the roof deck and insulation. Ontario pest intrusions through damaged soffit are a common cause of attic insulation damage and structural woodwork damage.

Staining on interior ceilings adjacent to exterior walls may indicate soffit-to-interior moisture transfer. This is particularly common in older homes where soffit ventilation is inadequate and condensation accumulates in the attic space. New ventilated soffit panels improve airflow and reduce condensation issues.
