Read the whole elevation before choosing trim
Photograph the house square-on from the street and from the approach to the entrance. Mark the roof edge, gable lines, porch and window heads. This shows whether the design is dominated by a broad roof, a low porch or tall walls, rather than by isolated colour samples.
Keep useful existing proportions in mind. A thin, smooth fascia can suit a restrained modern elevation; a layered cornice may suit a more traditional one. Repeating a small number of profiles usually makes additions easier to integrate with the original house.
Test colour and depth together
White trim makes a distinct outline against many siding colours. A darker fascia can connect with dark windows or roofing. Matching the main wall colour lowers contrast. View actual soffit and gutter samples with the fascia, because shade under the overhang changes their appearance.
If you are considering a deeper overhang, separate that proposal from decorative trim replacement. Changing the roof geometry can involve framing, loads, drainage and approvals. A sketch of a wider soffit is not a construction detail.
Choose details that fit the assembly
Corbels, frieze boards and decorative rafter tails can introduce rhythm around a porch or gable. Check their size in a mockup and show where they attach. Decorative pieces must not be assumed to carry roof or porch loads.
Leave the intended ventilation openings and drainage paths functional. Ask the installer how new profiles meet roof flashing and gutters, and how future maintenance will be accessed. Fastener visibility alone is not a reliable quality test: use the productβs approved attachment details.
