Cedar Siding Maintenance Guide for Ontario Homes

Siding Installation and Repair

Cedar is one of the most beautiful natural siding materials — but it requires consistent maintenance to prevent graying, cracking, and eventual rot in Ontario's climate.

Cedar contains natural oils (thujaplicins) that provide inherent resistance to decay and insect damage, but these oils diminish over time through UV exposure and weathering. Without periodic replenishment through staining or oiling, cedar siding grays, checks (develops surface cracks), and eventually loses its structural integrity.

Material Selection Guide

Stain type selection matters enormously for cedar. Penetrating oil-based stains are preferred over film-forming paint for cedar siding because they allow the wood to breathe. Film-forming paint traps moisture that migrates from the interior, causing paint failure and accelerating the decay it was meant to prevent.

Semi-transparent stains allow the wood grain to remain visible while providing UV protection and water resistance. Solid-color stains obscure the grain but provide the most UV protection and longest recoat intervals. For aged cedar showing gray tones but still structurally sound, a cedar brightener and restoration treatment before staining restores much of the original color.

What the Installation Process Looks Like

Application timing: cedar staining should be done in warm, dry weather with no rain forecast for 24 to 48 hours. The best window is late May through September in Ontario. Applying stain to cedar that has surface moisture — even from morning dew — results in poor penetration and uneven sheen.

Maintenance interval: well-stained cedar in good condition typically requires restaining every 4 to 7 years depending on sun exposure and product quality. Semi-transparent stains on south-facing walls may need attention every 3 to 4 years; sheltered north-facing elevations may go 8 to 10 years. Catch maintenance before complete finish failure to avoid needing a full restoration.
