Eavestrough cleaning frequency depends on your tree coverage, roof pitch, and gutter system type — most Ontario homes need cleaning at least twice a year to prevent overflow damage.

The once-a-year myth: many homeowners clean eavestroughs once in fall after leaves drop and consider the task complete. This overlooks spring cleaning after maple keys, pine pollen, and shingle granules accumulate through the winter runoff season. Fall cleaning is essential; spring cleaning is also necessary for most Ontario homes with deciduous trees.

Heavy tree coverage triggers more frequent cleaning needs. A home under mature maples may need cleaning three or four times per year: after spring seed drop (June), after late summer organic accumulation (September), and after fall leaf drop (November or December depending on tree type). Ignoring mid-season cleaning under heavy tree canopy leads to overflowing eavestroughs during summer thunderstorms.

Signs that cleaning is overdue include: water cascading over the front of the eavestrough during rain (blockage preventing drainage), birds or plants growing in the trough (organic matter accumulation), sagging sections (weight of wet debris), and staining on the fascia below (overflow washing organic stains onto painted surfaces).
