The right eavestrough size for your home depends on roof area, slope, rainfall intensity, and tree coverage — matching the system to your specific conditions prevents overflow and foundation damage.

The standard residential eavestrough in Ontario is 4-inch or 5-inch round, or 5-inch K-style. K-style (ogee-profile) eavestroughs have replaced round troughs as the dominant residential choice due to their flat back, which mounts flush against fascia, and their greater capacity relative to profile height.

Sizing is based on roof drainage area — the horizontal footprint of the roof section draining to a particular eavestrough run. A general rule is that 5-inch K-style handles approximately 5,000 square feet of roof area in Ontario's typical rainfall intensity. Homes with steep roof pitches have higher effective drainage areas and may require 6-inch trough.

Downspout sizing matters as much as trough sizing. A correctly sized 5-inch trough paired with an undersized downspout creates backpressure that prevents effective drainage during heavy rain. Standard is one 2x3-inch or 3x4-inch downspout per 35 to 40 linear feet of trough for typical Ontario rainfall conditions.
