Identify what the trim is made from
List painted wood, factory-coated metal, cellular PVC and other profiles separately. They do not necessarily use the same cleaning, primer or finish. Check for deterioration, open joints and water staining before deciding a repaint is all that is needed.
For PVC or factory-finished components, confirm the maker’s paint and colour restrictions. Soffit vents, drainage slots, weatherstripping and moving parts must remain functional. Do not treat every surface within the visual trim area as something to cover with the same coating.
Choose sheen and edge details with a sample
Satin and semi-gloss are common trim options, but there is no rule that every exterior door needs a gloss finish. Compare approved finishes for the selected coating and inspect a sample beside the siding in daylight. A higher sheen can emphasize surface irregularities as well as clean lines.
Agree the colour break at the trim-to-siding junction. Select brushes, rollers and masking suited to the profile and coating; a single brush size or a brushed finish is not mandatory for every visible surface. Test masking on vulnerable finishes and remove it according to the tape and paint instructions.
Inspect coverage and preserve water-shedding details
Pay attention to returns, edges and exposed end grain where the material’s coating system requires protection. Repair defects at sills and joints rather than relying on extra paint. Keep drip grooves and intentional drainage openings clear; do not bridge them with filler or paint.
Follow the specified film build and recoat window, allowing doors and other moving parts to remain operable as the finish cures. Review the work from several angles for missed areas, runs and inconsistent sheen. Retain the product and colour schedule so later touch-ups start with accurate information.
