Trim painting is where exterior projects succeed or fail visually — clean lines, correct sheen selection, and systematic coverage make the difference.

Trim includes every painted surface that isn't the primary siding: fascia boards, soffit panels, window and door casings, corner boards, and garage door surrounds. Trim is typically painted in a contrasting colour or sheen to the main siding, and is the element the eye follows when viewing a home's exterior.

Preparation Is Everything

Sheen selection for exterior trim is different from body siding. While flat or matte finishes are occasionally used for siding, trim should be painted in satin or semi-gloss. Higher sheen surfaces shed dirt more easily, resist moisture better, and are easier to wipe clean. Doors often receive a full gloss finish for maximum durability and visual impact.

Cutting in clean lines at the junction between trim and siding requires a steady hand, a quality angled sash brush, and — often — masking. Professional painters develop the eye-hand coordination for clean freehand cutting. For DIY projects, masking tape at the trim-siding boundary produces cleaner lines with less skill requirement.

Long-Lasting Results

Window casing painting requires systematic coverage of all surfaces — the face, the jamb extension, and the interior reveal if applicable. Skipping the underside of window sills is one of the most common oversights; water pooling on an unpainted sill causes rot within 2 to 3 seasons.

Brush selection matters for trim. A 2.5-inch angled sash brush is the standard for most trim work, providing control at edges and sufficient coverage for narrow boards. Foam rollers can be used for large, flat soffit panels to speed application, but a brush finish should be used on all visible surfaces for best appearance.
