Gable Vents: Function, Sizing, and Replacement Options

Gable vents are a critical but often ignored component of attic ventilation — undersized or blocked gable vents contribute to moisture accumulation, ice dams, and premature shingle failure.

Attic ventilation works on the principle of balanced airflow: cool outside air enters at the soffits (intake) and exits at the peak — through ridge vents, gable vents, or roof vents. When intake and exhaust are in balance, moisture-laden air from the living space below doesn't accumulate in the attic.

Planning Your Project

Gable vents are passive exhaust vents installed in the triangular wall section at the peak of each gable end. They're most effective in combination with soffit intake venting, but they can also provide cross-ventilation on their own in homes where ridge vents aren't installed.

Calculating required vent area uses the 1:150 rule: one square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor area. For a 1,200 square foot attic, you need 8 square feet of total net free vent area. Splitting this between intake and exhaust (half at soffit, half at peak) is the correct balanced approach.
