Stone veneer cladding achieves the look of natural stone at a fraction of the weight, cost, and installation time — and the quality of modern products makes the difference almost invisible.

Natural stone exterior cladding — true fieldstone or cut limestone — is one of the most beautiful and durable exterior materials available. It's also extremely heavy, requiring engineered structural support, and costs $60 to $100 per square foot installed. For most residential renovations, manufactured stone veneer achieves 95% of the aesthetic at 20 to 30% of the cost.

Planning Your Project

Manufactured stone veneer is produced from Portland cement, aggregates, and iron oxide pigments, cast in moulds made from actual stone samples. The variety of available profiles — ledge stone, river rock, fieldstone, ashlar — replicates the appearance of natural materials with excellent accuracy.

Installation requires a moisture barrier (housewrap or felt paper) and a metal lath base layer over the sheathing. Scratch coat mortar is applied, and individual stones are set in mortar in a pattern that minimizes visible joints and alternates sizes and orientations for a natural appearance.

Corner units are a critical detail in stone veneer installation. Properly installed corners show stone 'turning the corner' with a natural depth that looks authentic. Poorly executed corners — where the flat-face veneer simply meets at a mitre — immediately read as fake at close inspection.

Stone veneer accents are one of the most impactful curb appeal upgrades available for existing homes. Popular applications include the lower third of the front elevation (wainscot height), chimney cladding, entrance pillar cladding, and window sill accents. A partial stone accent with a strong horizontal datum line at the transition point looks intentional and architectural.
