What the fin does—and what still needs detailing
A fin provides an attachment and flashing interface on windows designed with one. It must work with the specified fasteners, supports, flashing and the surrounding wall layers. Not every new-construction window uses the same attachment arrangement, and a fin alone does not direct all water safely outside.
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the actual product and wall. Sill pans, tapes, sealants and head details must be compatible and arranged to preserve the intended drainage path. A generic instruction to tape three sides or caulk all four can conflict with a particular system.
What insert replacement keeps
An insert fits within a retained frame that must be suitable for reuse. This can limit disturbance to nearby finishes, but it also limits access to concealed defects. Review the old frame’s condition, existing leak history and how the new unit will connect to it.
Compare the proposed visible glass area and clear opening with what you have now. Additional framing can reduce them. Confirm screen access and operation too. A proposal should identify any interior trim, exterior trim or capping work rather than promise that all finishes will remain untouched.
When full-frame replacement changes the scope
Removing the old frame exposes the rough opening and creates an opportunity to repair damaged material and renew the connection to the wall. The quotation should explain what siding, masonry edges and interior finishes will be disturbed and who restores them.
Full-frame replacement is not a performance guarantee by name alone. The result still depends on a sound opening, appropriate support, water management and air sealing. Choose the scope that addresses the documented condition, and ask for the installation detail before the work is covered by trim.
