Aluminum capping provides a permanent, paint-free solution for protecting exposed wood fascia and trim — eliminating the most maintenance-intensive part of an exterior care routine.

Aluminum capping (also called aluminum coil capping) involves forming thin aluminum sheeting over existing wood trim surfaces — typically fascia boards, window and door casings, corner boards, and any other painted wood trim. The aluminum is custom-bent to the profile of each surface and secured over the wood, encapsulating it completely.

Planning Your Project

The primary benefit is eliminating paint maintenance on these surfaces. Capped aluminum is factory-finished with a baked enamel coating available in hundreds of standard colours. Unlike paint on wood, the finish doesn't crack, peel, or require repainting. Properly installed aluminum capping has an effective lifespan of 30 to 40 years.

The installation requires the wood substrate to be in sound condition. Rotted or structurally compromised wood behind aluminum capping continues to deteriorate and will eventually cause the capping to buckle or detach. The aesthetic limitation is that aluminum capping lacks the depth and texture of real wood trim. On heritage or traditional-style homes where wood trim detail is architecturally important, capping may not be appropriate. On newer homes or homes where the goal is maintenance reduction, it's an excellent solution.

Colour selection should be made in the context of the full exterior. Factory colours for aluminum capping range from pure white through grey, beige, brown, and dark bronze. Choosing a colour 2 to 3 shades lighter or darker than the main siding body creates the layered look of intentionally contrasted trim without the commitment of a bold accent.
