Decide whether the original trim should be covered
The cap is thin formed aluminum fitted to the face and returns of the trim. Its main benefit is reducing repeated repainting of exposed wood, particularly where roofline access is difficult. It does not make the assembly maintenance-free or guarantee decades of unchanged colour.
On a house with significant original mouldings, compare the finished profile with the existing wood before deciding. Repairing and painting may preserve detail better. A different material should not be described as automatically equivalent to the historic one.
Inspect the backing and shape the water path
Have the wood checked before capping. Record areas of decay, loose attachments and recurring wetting, then agree on repairs. New metal can hide a defect as effectively as it hides old paint.
Custom bends should fit the actual trim, including changes in depth at corners. Ask how the upper edge connects with roof or opening flashing and how joints will shed water. Follow the chosen product and assembly details rather than judging quality solely by whether fasteners are visible.
Coordinate gutter work and future repairs
Plan fascia covering and eavestrough removal or reinstallation together. Gutter attachment must reach suitable backing; fastening into a decorative skin alone is not an equivalent connection. The quote should identify reuse, new hangers, repaired wood and the final drainage arrangement.
Order colour samples for the cap, gutter and soffit together. If a custom colour is proposed, confirm availability instead of assuming a fixed lead time. Keep the product information, inspect the completed corners and arrange access for later cleaning or joint maintenance.
