Decide how much emphasis the entry needs
View the house from the approach people use, not only from directly in front of the door. A contrasting colour can make the entry easier to notice; a closer match can create a quieter composition. Neither effect is automatically better for every facade.
Compare the colours already present in masonry, roofing and trim. Navy, green, black or burgundy can be useful starting samples, but each has variations that may look different beside your materials. Avoid treating one navy as universally compatible or a warm/cool pairing as inherently wrong.
Test samples where the door will be seen
Use substantial sample boards or another method approved for the finish, and position them vertically at the doorway. Compare the leading options in morning, afternoon and shade, then look again with the entry lights on. Move back far enough to see the colour as part of the elevation.
Include hardware and glazing in the comparison. Check the intended sheen as well as the colour, because highlights and surface irregularities change its appearance. A small screen swatch is a starting reference, not a reliable substitute for a physical sample in the actual light.
Confirm the door can take the chosen finish
Identify whether the door is steel, fibreglass, wood or a factory-finished system. Ask the manufacturer about preparation, approved coatings, dark colours and any storm-door or exposure restrictions. Do not apply test patches to a warranted finish without checking compatibility.
Record the exact colour code, product and sheen, and decide which faces and edges are included in the work. Keep paint off weatherstripping, locks and other components that must operate freely. At completion, check the finished colour in normal light and verify that the door still closes and latches correctly.
